Why lullabies work
Lullabies are one of the oldest and simplest sleep tools we have. A good lullaby is slow (around 60–80 beats per minute, close to a resting heart rate), quiet, and repetitive. Those qualities do a few things at once:
- They signal sleep. Hearing the same gentle music each night becomes a cue in your baby's bedtime routine — a sound that means "it's time to rest."
- They soothe. Soft, predictable melodies are calming and can help settle a fussy or overtired baby.
- They mask noise. A steady lullaby smooths over sudden household sounds that might otherwise startle a light sleeper awake.
- They calm you too. Singing or playing a lullaby slows everyone down at the end of the day, parent included.
You don't need to be able to sing — pressing play works just as well. What matters is that the music is gentle and consistent.
How to choose a lullaby
The "best" lullaby is simply the one your baby settles to. A few things help:
- Keep it slow and soft. Avoid anything with a strong beat or big dynamic changes.
- Pick one and stick with it for a while. Repetition is what turns a song into a sleep cue.
- Loop it. Music that stops after two minutes can wake a baby in a light sleep phase — continuous playback keeps the calm going.
- Fade, don't cut. Sudden silence can wake a sleeping baby; a gentle fade-out is much kinder.
